Visual Perception
Basic Characteristics
- Description
Several studies have indicated a compromise of analysis of visual motion in observers with ASD. One study suggested that those with ASD show deficits in visual perception of motion in relation to children’s postural reaction to optic flow, the pattern of dynamic information that is projected onto the retinae whenever individuals move through their environment. The specific patterns of locomotor activity produce specific patterns of optic flow; thus, visual and motor processes are linked such that large field optic flow usually trigger compensatory motor activity and postural adjustments in the observer. However, the underlying neural mechanisms of optic flow perception by those with ASD are unknown, a complex known as area MST is strongly responsive during optic flow perception by typical observers. In contrast, those with AS have shown larger than normal postural responses to optic flow.
