Basic Characteristics
- Description
Verbal fluency is assessed by the verbaly fluency test where participants are required to say as many words as possible from a category in a given time (usually 60 seconds). Categories of words may either be semantic (e.g. animals or fruits) or phonemic (words that begin with "p"). Performance is measured as the total number of words read in the given amount of time. The number of repetitons, number and length of clusters of words from the same semantic or phonetic subcategories, and the numner of switches to other categories may also be analyzed. This test often used in neuropsychiatric evaluations of the frontal and temporal lobes. The test gives considerable insight into memory organization. Poor performance on the verbal fluency test may be the result of neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia.
