Global Functioning

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

Global functioning refers to the social, occupational, and psychological functioning of adults. Global functioning is assessed across a numerical scale that ranges from 0-100. This scale is the primary instrument for assessing change in psychiatric symptoms and functioning. It allows professionals to evaluate functioning on a hypothetical continuum of mental health and illness. The score that one receives on the global assessment of functioning scale constitutes axis V of the present DSM IV. The most severe conditions of any three dimensions constitutes the appropriate overall score.
