Attention

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

Attention is a cognitive process where a person selectively concentrates on one aspect of the environment and ignores others. We sustain focus using our cognitive resources on information while ignoring extraneous information. Attention is a basic precursor to other neurological and cognitive functions. There are various attention that exist including selective attention, alternating attention and divided attention. Attention is also tied to the concepts of working memory and executive functioning. Deficits in attention are often seen in Schizophrenia. However, attention can be defined so broadly that any poor performance on a task could indicate a deficit in attention.
