Visual Patterns test

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

The Visual Patterns test (VPT) examines short term visual memory. Participants are shown matrix patterns of black and white squares in grids of different sizes. The participants are required to memorize a series of black and white checkerboard-like patterns of increasing complexity. The matrix patterns are nearly impossible to code verbally. There is no sequencing required for the visual patterns test. This test produces a single score that is corrected for age and number of years of education. The Visual Patterns test has been used in studies of attention, mental imagery, and memory.
