Trail Making Test

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

The Trail Making Test is a neuropsychological test of visual attention and task switching. Participants are required to connect-the-dots of 25 consecutive targets on a sheet of paper. Two versions of the test exist. In the first version, all of the targets are numbers. In the Second version targets alternate between numbers and letters (1, A, 2, B). The 25 dots are distributed over a sheet of paper either 1-25 or numbers 1-13 with letters A-L. Participants must draw lines which connect the circles in ascending pattern. The goal is for participants is to finish as quickly as possible without lifting the pencil from the paper. The time it takes to complete the task is the main measure of performance. The Trail Making Test is often used as a diagnostic tool in clinical settings. Poor performance on the task is associated with brain impairment.
