The Counting Stroop is a variant of the original stroop task. This version of the Stroop task was created because speaking produces head movements that can exceed those tolerated by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) which prevented the collection of performance data. In this version of the stroop task participants report via button pressing the number of words that appear on a screen. Participants shoudl respond as quickly as possible without sacrificng accuracy for speed. Neutral trials, used for control, have single semantic category words of common animals such as 'dog' written three times. During interference trials number words incongruent with the correct response appear on a screen such as 'two' written four times. The responses from button pressing allow for online response time measurements without requiring speech. The Stroop Counting task has been used to examine the anterior cingulate cortex and deficits in performance have been linked to Bipolar Disorder.
