Response Selection

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

Response selection is the mental process of choosing representations for appropriate motor behavior given particular environmental stimuli and ones current situation and goals. Many cognitive theories of response selection postulate a unitary process and in most, if not all tasks, one central response is chosen. Response selection uses the prefrontal cortex. Studies have shown that there may be a distinction between areas that perform tasks of spatial response selection which is task performance and response preparation which is task preparation, although they both rely on the same neurocognitive mechanisms. There are various mental illnesses that are associated with response selection, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Schizophrenia.
