Reading Span Test (Daneman and Carpenter)

The Reading Span test behaviorally measures differences in verbal working memory capacity by processing and storage fuctions during reading sentences. The test can account for different aspects of language comprehension. In this test, lists of sentences instead of lists of words are presented to the participant. The participant is asked to read each sentence either silently or allowed, depending on the version of the test being administered. Then the participant is asked to make a judgement on the sentence. They may decide if the sentence the read is true or if it is grammatically correct. Participants are also asked to remember the last word of each sentence. After a certain number of sentences participants are asked to recall all of the last words in correct order. Performance on the Reading Span test is strongly related to reading comprehension and also to language comprehension. The reading version of the span test adds a processing demand to the requirement to remember a list of items as in the simple span task.
