Paired Associates Learning

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

Paired Associates Learning invloves pairing 2 items, usually words, as a stimulus and a response. When the learner is prompted with the stimulus word he responds with the appropriate word. Paired Associates learning is considered a third kind of learning. When we learn a new word we must pair the word itself with the concept in represents. This invovles two separate mental processes: learning the response, and formation of the bond between the two words.

  • History

The idea of Paired Assocaites Learning was created by Mary Whiton Calkins in 1894.
