Cognitive Control
Basic Characteristics
- Description
The term cognitive control is often used synonymously with executive function to refer to a variety of processes which serve to guide our thoughts and behaviors. Cognitive control is particulary important when a person overrides an automatic response. It is generally accepted that the prefrontal cortex is the primary area of the brain associated with functioning related to cognitive control.
- History
British psychologist Donald Broadbent was the first to identify what he called selective attention and distinguished between 'automatic' and 'controlled' processes in the 1950s. It wasn't until 1975, however, that US psychologist Michael Posner coined the term cognitive control.
