Conner's continuous performance test (CPT) is a measure used to assess attention and vigilance. The test is commonly administered to those suspected of having attentional disorders such as [[ADHD]] or trouble with neurological functioning. During this task letters of the alphabet are presented one at a time for 250 MS. The subject is instructed to press the key board for every letter except the letter "X". Subjects will complete 6 blocks each containing 3 sublocks of 20 letters each. For each block the sublocks have different interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 1, 2, or 4s. Order of ISIs varies across blocks. Letters are approximately 1" in size, and bold faced. Respones provide a measure of variance for both accuracy of responding and reaction time. The higher the variance, the more inconsistent the participants attention. The measure is appropriate for ADHD research and clinical assessments for subjects over 6 years of age. Response patterns generated by participants give an understanding of present deficits such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, activation, etc depending on the pattern.
