Attention Network Task-Flanker Task (ANT)

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

The Attention Network Task (ANT) was developed to test the three attentional networks (alerting, orienting, and executive control) with a single task. The task consists is a combination of a cued reaction time task and a flanker task. A theoretically derived test, the ANT allows for the identification of a specific deficit rather than suggesting the existance of an overall disturbance in performance across several interrelated tasks.

Subjects copmlete the task on a computer by clicking right and left mouse buttons to respond to visual stimuli. A row of 5 visually presented white lines with arrowheads are shown pointing to the left or to the right. The target is a leftward or rightward pointing arrowhead at the center. The target is flanked on either side by two congruent or incongruent arrows (same or opposite direction), or by neutral lines. The task of the participant is to indicate the direction of the central target by pressing the right or left mouse button as quickly as possible.
