Rey-Ostereith Complex Figure Test

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

The Rey Ostereith Complex Figure Test (ROFC) is a neurological assessment tool which examines visuospatial abilities, memory, attention, and planning. Examinees are required to replicate a complex line drawing; first by copying and then by memory. Participants are supplied with paper and pencil. The stimulus figure is placed in front of them and they are asked to reproduce the figure to the best of their ability. The test is not timed but the time it takes to complete the figure is observed. Once the first copy is complete, the stimulus figure and the examinee's first copy are removed from view. There are essentially three conditions in which the participant replicates the figure. The first is the copy condition where they reproduce the figure as it presents in front of them. Then there is the Immediate recall condition where participants reproduce the figure from memory after a short delay. After a longer delay of 20-30 minutes the delayed recall condition takes place where participants draw what they can remember. The immediate and delayed recall conditions test implicit memory. Each copy is scored for accurate reproduction and placement of specific design elements. Also noted are the approach and effectiveness of any given strategy utilized by the participant. It is important to note that examinees are not told beforehand that they will be asked to draw form memory. This assessment tool is frequently used in the assessment of brain injury, dementia, and cognitive development.
