PANSS

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) measures the severity of symptoms of people with Schizophrenia. The scale names two different clusters of symptoms; positive and negative. Positive symptoms are those in excess of normal human behavior and experience and negative symptoms entail a loss of normal functioning. The scale is applied in a 45-50 minute interview where 30 different symptoms are rated on a scale from 1-7. Scores are based on the interview with the patient as well as reports from family and primary care hospital workers.
