Child Behavior Checklist

Basic Characteristics

  • Description

The Child Behavior Checklist(CBC) has been validated in both clinical and nonclinical populations through a plethora of studies. Studies have reported the association of bipolar disorder with a unique CBC profile. A study that evaluated the ability of the CBC to discriminate between ASD and non-ASD youth suggested that the sum of the CBCL-Withdrawn, Social, and Though Problems scales best discriminated between the two groups.

The CBC measures symptoms present over the previous 6 months. 1

  • History

The CBC is a parent report questionnaire developed by Thomas M. Achenbach for evaluating behavioral and emotional problems in children between the ages of 2-18, one version for children between 2-3 and one version for 4-18. The test assesses internalizing (i.e., anxious, depressive, and overcontrolled) and externalizing (i.e., aggressive, hyperactive, noncompliant, and undercontrolled) behaviors.
