ASD Interventions

Basic Characteristics

There are many different types of treatments available for children with ASD. Many, however, are scientifically unsubstantiated so far.

Applied Behavioral Analysis
ABA style interventions have been shown to be effective as a comprehensive (greater than 20 hours a week) treatment. These type of interventions target social deficits.
Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children
TEACCH interventions have a long history and well developed curricula, but have not been shown to be linked to treatment outcomes.
Sensory Integration Therapy
This approach was developed off the observation that children with ASD often have unusually sensitive sensory responses, such as hypersensitivity to certain noises. Sensory Integration Therapy techniques include brushing of the skin, swinging to stimulate vestibular responses, and deep-pressure massage given to calm the child. There is no empirical support for sensory integration therapy. These type of interventions are often used in special education programs.
